[this may help]

let it fall/let it fall

let it fall

let it fall

ringing chiming rolling

rolling through my head

one over the other

let it fall
let it fall
let it fall

but i am not falling

i am ascending

higher/higher/higher

-----------------------coast

some thirty-thousand feet in the air

let it fall/let it fall

let it fall

let it fall

up over the pacific

so far down it just looks like sky

big blue eternity

spotted with clouds

let it fall

let it fall

let it fall

surprisingly soothing

for a ride in the sky.

my thoughts are heavy with

shoulda coulda wouldas.
i don't know where they began
but more importantly,
i can't figure out where they'll end.
soon i hope.
tonight is quiet and my thoughts persist.
i lay here wishing for a storm to come.
rain hitting the roof with my room below
rumbling thunder rolling over this town
wrapping me up
tucking me in.
these thoughts full of worry
bombard my head
just as soon as it hits the pillow.
dreams peek through
but i don't want those either.
i just want sleep.

do you remember how long we waited?
months, weeks, days, and even counting down the hours til the plane landed;
the thirteen of us finally reunited.
that crazy flight filled with silly laughs
sure to annoy the other passengers surrounding our family.
all of us spread out along the rows of seats.

we swam in the ocean for hours that day.
letting the salty goodness wash over us,
too excited to worry about sunscreen and hydration.
but we paid for it later.
bending over the counters side by side,
whining for our moms to put aloe on our blistered shoulders.
you guys were so pissed,
the hours spent in the tanning salon peeling right off your backs.

we traveled in taxis packed to the brim
each time spilling out into the streets,
like a slinky crawling down the stairs.
thirteen different conversations filling the air,
as we made our way through each little adventure we had set out on.
exploring a beautiful postcard of a town that could only be reached by boat,
shopping in sweltering heat and getting a feel for the locals,
a girls' trip to get our hair tightly braided,
cooking the nine foot sailfish the boys caught on their fishing trip,
the hours spent setting up camp at the pool each day,
and savoring each moment of beach before our time was up.

i want to get back there.
to the sweaty, lazy heat cooled down by a dip in the pool.
to each uncontrollable fit of laughter.
to a week of family breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
to those peaceful nights when you could sleep easy
and there wasn't anything to worry about.
take me back,
to where you could never ask for more.

loose ends

i forget lots of things
information just seems to slip away
right through my fingers
until all i'm holding on to is a tiny little corner
a thread of what i used to know

i forget especially when i'm in between
family to friends
school to home
class to class
am to pm

i forget and it's so easy
i forget that it IS so easy
to lose track of a thought or motivation
or let go of a memory
that i once tried to clutch so tightly

and i worry
with forgetting being so easy, so prevalent
how will i remember to remember?

the story of my life

the other day as i was making my usual rounds on facebook, i came across a note my auntie recently posted. it's a poem written by portia nelson and every time i read it, it made more and more sense.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS

by Portia Nelson

I

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place
but, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
my eyes are open
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V
I walk down another street.

my auntie commented on it saying, "i think i'm still stuck on chapter 3." i'm pretty sure that's the chapter i'm stuck on, too.

finding that last poem and a satisfying day with one of my favorite buds has motivated me to give it another shot and try my hand at poetry once again.

just what i needed
this is us never skipping a beat
back on the beach
where i found God in three genuine friends and your guitar

cleaner than my teeth WHITE with a sparkle in the smile

just the two of us
touching on our recent troubles
and the more unrecent but ample memories that define our friendship

BLUE crystal gems found deep in a cave

picking up each others' sentences
dropped in conversations with strangers that don't belong in "us"
but are amused by our inside jokes whose origins are sometimes unknown
even to me and you

sun-dried tomato RED in the heat of summer

i fill you in on all the things i've kept tucked away
and you tell me that you're proud of me
i needed that

oil slick Barrabas hair BLACK

and it's just the two of us
while the other two are halfway around the world
making the differences we expected them to make
but we pick up right where we left off

SILVER

never skipping a beat

superheroes and comic books have always been something of interest for me. my dad is a big marvel junkie and it's always seemed to rub off on me. when i was little i spent a lot of time watching teenage mutant ninja turtles and the x-men with him and when i found out he had stacks of comic books in our garage. my favorite ones are the origins of superheroes. they tell you how an outcast like peter parker became a super strong webhead swinging through the city and gamma radiation caused scientist, bruce banner, to become a massive green monster.

i love the common themes that relate each character to the others. they're all so misunderstood and trapped between the desire to lead the normal life of their alter ego and the responsibility of saving the world. anyhow, i wrote this poem my freshman year of high school and came across it the other day. so here it goes...

superhero
you look like a fool
up there in the air.
with your bright red tights
and matching cape.
so you can fly,
who cares??
it doesn't mean you need to show it off,
saving lives and what not.

i could save lives, too,
if i wanted to.
i mean,
who really wants infinite strength?
i know i don't.
plus,
your work schedule sucks.

my life is way better than yours.
people don't depend on me
and nobody cares
if i mess up.
the life of a superhero is so overrated.
but, you know,
if you ever need a sidekick or anything...
i'm available.
