take me back

do you remember how long we waited?
months, weeks, days, and even counting down the hours til the plane landed;
the thirteen of us finally reunited.
that crazy flight filled with silly laughs
sure to annoy the other passengers surrounding our family.
all of us spread out along the rows of seats.

we swam in the ocean for hours that day.
letting the salty goodness wash over us,
too excited to worry about sunscreen and hydration.
but we paid for it later.
bending over the counters side by side,
whining for our moms to put aloe on our blistered shoulders.
you guys were so pissed,
the hours spent in the tanning salon peeling right off your backs.

we traveled in taxis packed to the brim
each time spilling out into the streets,
like a slinky crawling down the stairs.
thirteen different conversations filling the air,
as we made our way through each little adven
ture we had set out on.
exploring a beautiful postcard of a town that could only be reached by boat,
shopping in sweltering heat and getting a feel for the locals,
a girls' trip to get our hair braided,
cooking the nine foot sailfish the boys caught on their fishing trip,
the hours spent setting up camp at the pool each day,
and savoring each moment beach before our time was up.

i want to get back there.
to the sweaty, lazy heat
cooled down by a dip in the pool.
to each uncontrollable fit of laughter.
to a week of family breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
to those peaceful nights when you could sleep easy
and there wasn't anything to worry about.
take me back,
to where you could never ask for more.

current obsessions.

>> Friday, December 11, 2009

and so i've finally reached winter break and i'm totally stoked, but i really don't know what to do with myself. i'm still waiting to hear about one grade and can't seem to stop stressing about it. this particular grade means a lot to my gpa/major/schedule/too much to think about. needless to say, i'm freaked. i've been trying to find things to distract myself from it all: work, friendship bracelets, sugar cookies, sugar cookies with vanilla frosting, sleep, etc; however, the most effective distraction i've found has been 90s hip hop. seriously, it's perf.

i watched this movie called, the wackness, recently, probably about a month ago. super good. freaking josh from drake and josh and ben kingsley! if you haven't seen it i definitely recommend it. the movie centers around a pot dealer the summer after he graduates high school and the bond he forms with his shrink. the soundtrack is rad. totally rad. and exactly what i needed for today. so here are a few of my current obsessions (not all from the soundtrack but all equally sick):

bump n' grind (r. kelly)
can i kick it? (a tribe called quest)
ignition (r. kelly)
that thing (lauryn hill even though it's not from the 90s)
gin and juice (snoop dogg)
i'll be missing you (faith evans/puff daddy)

obsessions

i am pleased to say that PinkAppleCore has passed on this lovely award. the rules are to share five things you're obsessed with and then pass it on to five fabulous blogs you read. i was so excited when i scrolled down and found my name on the list. thanks for thinking i'm fabulous, PinkAppleCore! and now for my obsessions (in no particular order)...

1. making lists. i need to make lists to remember anything so my backpack is filled with my to do's written on post-its and my laptop is filled with lists and notes on virtual post-its. i even have a listography to organize my thoughts.

2. farmville on facebook. a little embarrassing to admit, but i figure i should be honest. i check my farm multiple times a day and all my roommates made fun of me until they got hooked, too! it's just a never ending cycle of plow-plant-harvest. i get hooked on games pretty easily so it's not that big of a surprise.

3. late night drives with a good soundtrack. hell, i love any drives with a good soundtrack. i feel like i can be happy no matter what as long as there's some good music in the background. which reminds me,

4. movies. when i was in middle school i had major dreams of becoming a director one day. i think i'm a little too practical to motivate those ambitions, but i will always be down for a good film. recently our cable stopped working for a week and our house became movie central. the past few movies i've watched have been "the wackness" (totally recommend it), "twilight" (it seems to always be playing somewhere in this house and we're all pretty stoked for the new moon premier), "the brothers bloom" (the story of crafty con artists and you can never go wrong with adrian brody) and "a little princess" (this post from ali and wonderland got me craving it).

5. finally, i am obsessed with this picture my auntie posted on facebook. it's of my grandparents circa 1964. so young, i don't even think they were parents yet. i made it the background of my laptop and it makes me happy every time i open it up.

and now, here are some fabulous blogs that i follow:

snapshots of a young soul: the rogue hobbit
angel lust: kat walk

i also want to pass this award back to PinkAppleCore cuz she always show interest in what i have to say and makes me feel popular with all the comments she leaves on my posts. thanks chica!

'tis the season

things are so much easier when you know what to expect. i love my traditions. new year's with hailey, easter brunch at unk's, yellow cake with chocolate frosting for my birthday, being in charge of the torch on the fourth of july, carving pumpkins with the fam, the way my aunties always know i like to put the marshmallows on the yams, the deli tray put out for dinner on christmas eve and taking my little cousins out on the hunt for rudolph's nose in the sky. things change, though. i'm all for trying new things, but it's hard to change what i know. when it comes down to it, i don't think it's so hard because of the actual changes being made, the new things i have to try. it's hard because i know it's never going to be the same. and i'm afraid i might forget.

some finishing touches

>> Saturday, October 10, 2009

after looking through the playlist i created last week, i realized it just wasn't lengthy enough and that a few songs were missing. so let me just add a few more...

21. beast of burden: the rolling stones (suuuch a good one. try comparing this intro with miley cyrus's party in the usa, i think the resemblance is what made me break down and actually like one of her songs)
22. history repeating: propellerheads feat. shirley bassey (though i've always loved this song, i must admit that my recent obsession was sparked by the season premier of the hills when just as the closing credits began to roll shirley bassey's voice pipes in with, "and it's all just a little bit of history repeating." perfection.)
23. wasted: cartel (introduced to me by one of my roomies and now i can't stop listening to it)
24. xanax: maria taylor (i rediscovered this song on an old mix cd a youth leader at my church gave me and it's so so good)
25. as much as i ever could: city and colour (i just want dallas green to serenade me forever)

enjoy =]

the (most recent) soundtrack of my life

>> Friday, October 2, 2009

i feel like it's been a pretty solid month. throughout the past few weeks several songs have been shuffling in and out of my mind. my recent love for/obsession with some of these songs is a little embarrassing to admit, but here we go (in no particular order)...

1. empire state of mind: jay-z feat. alicia keys (the vma performance made me want to go to new york...where dreams are made of)
2. L.E.S. Artistes: santigold
3. heartbeats: jose gonzalez (a cover of the knife's more electro original)
4. she wolf: shakira (except this video is a little too freaky)
5. wise up: amiee mann (this video is from the movie magnolia)
6. chan chan: buena vista social club
7. let's get it on: marvin gaye (seriously, this song is way too good. one of my favorite movie scenes of all time is this one from high fidelity where jack black covers this classic)
8. elevator love letter: stars (the opening chords and the bassline that skips right along side with it, aaahhhh. superb)
9. love song: the cure (i once had the pleasure of playing this song for a youth event at my church. love the bassline. 311 does a really nice cover, too)
10. your hand in mine: explosions in the sky (lyricless and beautiful)
11. post-war: m. ward (you gotta really listen to the lyrics)
12. skeleton boy: friendly fires (i know i've posted this video before, but it never gets out of my head)
13. good girls go bad: cobra starship (i lovelovelove everything about this video)
14. good ol' fashion nightmare: matt & kim (definitely would have been my number one must-see band at outside lands this year. unfortunately i was too broke to buy a ticket)
15. party in the usa: miley cyrus (the first song i've ever liked from her. just makes you wanna dance, i swear)
16. we are not a football team: minus the bear (always)
17. ready for the floor: hot chip (check out the video!!)
18. let's stay together: al green (there's a special place in my heart for al green. for some reason i really started liking him my freshman year of high school. that year one of my favorite christmas presents was a cd of his greatest hits)
19. best i ever had: drake (i hated it at first, but it's become a sort of anthem among my friends)
20. sweet dreams: beyonce (she's too good for her own good)

YYYs 101 (by request)

>> Thursday, September 24, 2009

and now because of a request made by this one, here is the extent of my knowledge and simple love for the yeah yeah yeahs. honestly, i don't know too much about them, but i have always loved their contribution to music: a three-piece, chick-led, indie rock band without a bass player. normally this kind of band wouldn't make it passed the middle school talent show. i'm a bass player myself and if i had a dollar for every time someone told me they didn't realize which part i was contributing to the song until either i dropped out or everyone else in the band dropped out, i'd probably have about $27, but i don't play too often so that's saying a lot. so it has always amazed me that the band could have such a full sound with just guitar, drums, and vocals.

for my 15th birthday my dad took me to my first concert, live 105's BFD. it's an annual, all-day concert consisting of three different stages and the subsonic tent. that year the yeah yeah yeahs were the first band on the main stage. a friend of my dad's warned him of their performance calling the lead singer's, karen o, stage antics "orgasmic". it was hard to picture what exactly that meant in my naive 15-year old mind, but after watching the show i'm pretty sure i figured out what was meant by the comment.

their sound is chant-heavy, filled with tight snares, danceable beats, and jagged riffs, enough to get anyone out of their seat and moving. here are a few of my favorite songs:

-maps (all the components of this song are superb. it includes one of my favorite drum beats ever causing me to fall slightly in love with brian chase, the echo of nick zinner's guitar, and, though i don't know if i fully understand what might be intended by them, the lyrics are beautiful. the video is simple and perfect)
-date with the night (because it makes me feel like i should be up to no good.)
-mystery girl (i just really like the sillyness of lyrics. "take a deep breath, babe, cuz we just started".)
-gold lion (though the lyrics aren't easy to figure out like so many other artists out there, i love looking at each song in bits and phrases. especially for this one.)

and finally here's an "track by track" interview they did for their newest album "it's blitz!"
